ST LOUIS (March 3, 2016) Mother’s Day is the highlight of the Spring season and the Delmar Gallery Shop is a perfect place to shop for your mom, mother-in-law, stepmom, grandma, the mother of your children, your favorite aunt, your co-pet parent, your babysitter, your motherly neighbor, or whomever you will celebrate this Mother’s Day! We will present new handmade collections from many of our talented artists and designers. Foremost among the new collections will be special collections from two local artists: Susan Bostwick, a ceramicist and Vivian Gaston, a jewelry maker.
Susan Bostwick is a local ceramics treasure. As a former Craft Alliance teacher, Susan has also inspired generations of young potters at John Burroughs and SIUE. In her own artworks, Susan emphasizes our relationship with the Earth:
From a simple arrangement to the drama of transformation, I am captivated by the universe that lies beneath my feet. It is a world of insects, decaying leaves, fallen fruit, and regeneration; punctuated by artifacts, trash, mementos. I live in a semi-rural area where days are spent raking fallen fruit or gardening with my face close to the ground… In the studio I work slowly; layering materials, techniques and content in an effort to balance the formal and the personal.
The personal touch that she puts into every completed piece is whimsical, fantastical and fun. For the Mother’s Day event, Susan will present a collection of wall hanging ceramic garden trowels, teapots, and cups each one teaming with sculptural birds, bugs and plant life. Through multiple firings and careful combinations, Susan creates collections “that evokes the passage of time and accentuates the marks and textures that develop in the process of construction.” Her collection will be an excellent alternative to flowers for the nature loving mom.
Vivian Gaston is a self-taught St. Louis jewelry artist who uses recycled silver to make her jewelry. Her personal perspective on jewelry making combined with an impeccable sense of style makes Vivian’s work both wearable and unique. As Vivian explains:
The bulk of my work features forged dots recycled from sterling scrap: bits of wire, shavings, neglected jewelry are torched to form molten balls of possibility. They are then quenched and forged to support and accent a variety of gemstones. My work embraces a philosophy of casual luxury and effortless chic. My designs are wearable art for both the everyday as well as life’s special celebrations!
A long time Delmar Gallery Shop favorite, Vivian will present her delicate and affordable gemstone collection, as well as a new collection featuring gemstones on lively sterling silver squares. She’s gone geometric and we just know mom will love it!
