About Me:
Melshonda Lowe-Dobbins – Artist Statement

My work is an interpretation of the familiar… a social commentary of the human experience. Everything that could be seen, felt and experienced motivates the rhythmic entities that flow through my work.

Each piece begins with a thought that transforms into a single body. 1 or 2 or many other faceless individuals may accompany that single body. I choose to draw individuals who are unidentifiable to keep the focus on the mood of the piece…the action or situation of the piece rather than who is the piece about.

Influences
For the past 2 years my art has been changing from the traditional and predictable to a more stylistic approach to depicting the human form and it’s environment. The artists who give me the courage to push my own envelope are Keith Haring, an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s, Ernest Trova a self-taught Surrealist and Pop Art painter and sculptor, and M.C. Escher, a graphic artist and mathematician who is most famous for his “impossible structures”.
