The Logic and
Psychology of Art Sales
Proven Techniques to Maximize Sales and Build Clientele
Many artists find themselves stymied by the prospect of actually selling their art, feeling that they lack the skills to successfully represent themselves to prospective buyers. It may surprise them that many art dealers and gallery owners also face the same challenges when representing their art to customers and clientele. These fears are usually the result of never having had the proper training and understanding of the basic philosophy of art sales. As with all types of sales, the selling of art requires knowledge of the particular logic behind a person’s decision to acquire the product, and how one can set the stage and steer the customer all the way to the acquisition. Steve Wagner’s time-tested and proven methods, developed from working as art consultant and gallery director at numerous blue-chip galleries in San Francisco, will educate you on the psychology behind art sales and teach you valuable art sales techniques, such as properly greeting your customer, focusing them on an artwork, taking control of the conversation, making a passionate presentation, and finalizing the sale. Steve’s easy 7-Step process will give you the confidence, knowledge and ability to sell any type of art to people from all walks of life and build an ever-growing clientele of buyers and collectors. Whether you are an artist who is shy about representing yourself, an art dealer who stumbles during the process of “closing a deal,” or a gallery owner looking to motivate and train sales staff, Steve’s tried and true approach will bring both immediate and increasing success to your sales efforts.
Steve Wagner has over thirty years of experience in a wide variety of art and entertainment industry fields. A veteran San Francisco media personality, gallery director and art dealer, Steve has personally sold millions of dollars worth of fine art and trained numerous sales staffs and art consultants, many of whom went on to become directors at major California galleries.
For ten years Steve was director of the San Francisco Art Exchange, a leading gallery for music and pop-culture fine art, working directly with over 100 top celebrity photographers and album cover artists. He has brokered sales of many of the world’s most famous album cover original art-works, paintings, and photographs at record prices, including: Hipgnosis' Pink Floyd and Genesis album cover art (Dark Side of the Moon; Wish You Were Here; Animals; Ummagumma; Lamb Lies Down on Broadway; And Then There Were Three); Iain Macmillan's Beatles photography (Abbey Road); Michael Cooper’s Beatles photography (Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band); Robert Freeman’s Beatles photography (With the Beatles, Beatles for Sale, Rubber Soul); Jerold Schatzberg’s Bob Dylan photography (Blonde on Blonde); and Roger Dean’s Yes album cover paintings (Yessongs, Yesterdays, Yesshows, Drama).
